I have devoted my 30-year educational career to improving curriculum and instruction for English learners. My scholarly articles, research, ELD and literacy programs focus on accelerating academic and social achievement for long-term English learners and U.S. educated bilingual youths who will be the first family member to have access to higher education. Although much of my career focus has been secondary and college aged English learners, I am now equally attentive to K-6 curriculum and instruction as my own son is an English learner. I have exciting district initiatives dramatically improving students' lesson engagement and verbal and written proficiency. I am the lead scholar on three U.S. Department of Education research initiatives aimed at improving academic language proficiency and instruction in primary grades and middle schools. A partnership with the California League of Schools, the “Families for College” Innovation in Education (I3) grant now celebrates 88% reclassification of 320 long-term English learners in Moreno Valley and was deemed one of the most statistically significant Innovation in Education (i3) grants funded by the USDOE. I am blessed with two amazing adopted children. My ethnic Vietnamese daughter recently graduated from high school with the Seal of Biliteracy in English, Spanish and French. My Guatemalan teenage son, an English learner, is advancing both his academic English and Spanish skills while working earnestly to become a master bagpiper! Recent interests include helping ELD TOSAs hone their ELD technical coaching acumen and skills and supporting ELA and ELD educators in integrating more language-focused writing support for academic English learners.
